Debunking the Shamrock Shake

As St. Patty's day nears, we start to see many of our favourite, festive treats surface: golden dubloons, green beer and, of course, everyone's favourite Shamrock Shake. I will admit, there was a time I looked forward to this season just so I could get my hands on one of those shakes. They are minty, they're sweet, and they're green! Maybe you're planning on just buying the small, to avoid breaking you calorie bank. Maybe you have been saving up your treat days for one large! Whatever the case, here are a few facts about those minty green delights you should consider before running down to the nearest Golden Arches:

  • A SMALL is 530 calories, MEDIUM is 660 and a LARGE is 820

  • A SMALL had 15 g of fat (that's 135 calories of fat!) 93 g of carbs and 11 g of protein! Of that, 8g are saturated fats (the type of fats that can impact your 'bad' cholesterol) and 75g of sugar. Not to mention if contains 14% of your daily salt intake. IN A SMALL!!

  • A LARGEhas 23 g if fat!!!

Now, I know you're still thinking: "so what?! It's a treat! Aren't you always preaching on about the end of restrictive diets?!" Yes, but wouldn't it be better if you had the option of making something that is better for, gives you a boost of your daily vitamins and nutrients, and tastes the same, if not better? Well...you're welcome!

Muscle Momma's 'Shamrock' Smoothie:

1 frozen banana (sliced up)

2 ice cubes

1/4 c unsweetened almond milk

1/4 c water

2 scoops chocolate protein powder (I used Perfect Protein)

1/2 c spinach

1/4 tsp mint extract

1 tbsp Walden Farms Mocha syrup

Throw it all in a blender, and blend my friends! I have been having these all week, and haven't been disappointed yet. It is 347 calories, with 51 g of protein, 29 g carbs, and 3 g of fat! Not to mention you're getting a boost of iron, potassium, and calcium! It's a great midday snack and a healthy alternative pick-me-up to get you through the rest of your day while fending off cravings. Plus, you won't have that bloat belly and gut ache when you're done! Try it! You're body will thank you.
