How to stay active this winter -the fun way!

Well 2016 has arrived and we have, all, made some resolutions we hope we can stick to! A common one is to be more active! However, aside from going to the gym and working out at home, there are very few apparant ways to get active in this frozen tundra we call "Home." It's for this very reason I have made it a goal to get outside, more, and stay active with my family! Afterall, getting my cardio in is much easier when I'm not doing it bored on a treadmill!

Sledding!

Really, all you need is a sled, some snow pants, and a small incline. Voila! An amazing afternoon spent as a family, getting outside and staying active! WARNING: I have recently discovered that sledding, as a parent, is far less exhilarating than in your younger years! Pulling your children up a hill, after chasing them down as they hurl through the snow is difficult. BUT! You can count it as your cardio for the day, or week, or month. Your choice, I don’t judge.

Ice Castle in Hawrelack Park

I am particularly excited about this one! We have an avid Elsa fan in our house –and Boo is pretty excited about her, too! Pair that with the fact that my two Edmonton-born babies seem far less annoyed with the cold than their BC-bred parents, and you have yourself a good reason to go explore a beautiful castle made of ice! Prices aren’t too bad for the half-hour walking tour, $12.95 for 12+ and $9.95 for children ages 4-11, (kids 3 and under are free.) Don’t forget to bring your sled for some “after-tour” fun!

Taking The Walking Dead and adding the challenge of a Canadian winter, this obstacle course will put your family’s fitness to the test! You can choose to run as a Warmblood –running for your life from the zombies- but, let’s face it: after watching the ‘white walkers’ in Game of Thrones, chasing the Warmbloods sounds much more fun! Plus! There’s a Groupon to make it a little bit easier on those pockets!

#YEG Snowball Fight

Imagine attending the biggest snowball fight you have ever attended. You can work as a team, or choose to pummel each other, and strangers, with snow. Last winter, Edmonton experiences a 2,000+ person snowball fight at a secret location and time. This year is designed exactly the same. Just email your number to yegsnowfight@gmail.com to put your name on the list to receive information on the when/whereabouts of the next fight. I can’t wait for my text!

If you’re wanting to introduce the littles to the exhilarating life of swooshing down a mountain strapped to one, or two thing boards: this is your answer! Bonus: there’s a Groupon to help with the costs! For $70 you get one-day lift ticket and rentals for two people! With three terrain parks, and 40 acres of terrain, you’re sure to have a great day with the family!
